Jack Richardson
Another plug for a friend from university. Jack Richardson has put up a website with his portfolio of outstanding work at http://standinginafield.com/.
Some examples are below:

BBC Appreciation Station pt.2
There has been a documentary on BBC4 over the last month called Berlin and it is about the history of the city and its dual identities. It’s surprisingly fascinating viewing and helped along by the usual BBC high production standards and a beautiful soundtrack scored specifically for the series. The show is part of the Open University and at the end of each episode prompts you to apply for a copy of the written accompanying guide. I wasn’t too bothered but curiously made me go back in my browser and click the link and it just gave me a simple page to put my name and address. I didn’t have to create an account or verify anything, and less than a week later I got my free guide through the post.

The Forgotten Defenders
This was done for a little zine project that Jack Richardson is working on. The rules were it had to be on the themes of British, 50+(age) and three. Other limits were black and white only and had to fit on A5.
As I had already done the Vulcan stuff I’ve posted earlier, I immediatly knew I wanted to do the V Bombers. I started work on a kind of mash-up infographics poster but I got bogged down with it and felt really limited by the lack of colour. So in the end I played to my strengths and did a layout composition. Once I got going it was a lot of fun to make, although I spent most of my weekend on it – it definately was a change from making websites for clients.
I tried to recreate the style of some of those military adverts from the 50s, and if there’s one part I particularly like, it’s the mix of spaced out caps, then tighter italics underneith under the weapons.

Another Cold War design
One page of a design I’m working on for a friend’s zine. The themes are Britain, Three and 50+ Years Old, so I’m going for all three. I’m working on a second page.

Confessional
I’m feeling compelled to update this blog everyday now. Today I was waiting in Specsavers to get my glasses readjusted as theyre wearing holes in my nose and I came across Specsavers Magazine. Now every page and I mean EVERY page has one or multiple pictures of glasses on. I dunno why this would surprise me but flicking through it, I just felt visually assaulted by the tremendous quantity of fashionable eye-wear directed at my attention. Then I saw this one picture of some metal type that just screamed out to me.
